Tahoe-LAFS is a Free and Open decentralized cloud storage system. It distributes your data across multiple servers. Even if some of the servers fail or are taken over by an attacker, the entire file store continues to function correctly, preserving your privacy and security.
Minio is an object storage server released under Apache License v2.0. It is compatible with Amazon S3 cloud storage service. It is best suited for storing unstructured data such as photos, videos, log files, backups and container / VM images. Size of an object can range from a few KBs to a maximum of 5TB.
Minio server is light enough to be bundled with the application stack, similar to NodeJS, Redis and MySQL.
For production environments, we suggest to install croit in Docker on a dedicated server or VM. croit is well tested with Debian Linux but works on any other OS with a current version of Docker. This host will be refered to as the management node within this guide.
To give you a little bit of background when the OSD writes into his journal it uses D_SYNC and O_DIRECT. Writing with O_DIRECT bypasses the Kernel page cache, while D_SYNC ensures that the command won’t return until every single write is complete. So yes, basically the OSD forces all the writes to be flushed prior to start the next IO.
Open Kinetic is an open source Collaborative Project formed under the auspices of the Linux Foundation dedicated to creating an open standard around Ethernet-enabled, key/value Kinetic devices.
Kinetic is a drive architecture in which the drive is a key/value server with Ethernet connectivity. The architecture is inspired by the scale out data center in which Ethernet and Linux are ubiquitous, open source software reduces barriers to entry, and hardware is becoming more commoditized.

Direct-Wired, Ultra-Large Storage Pods
After experiencing backblane-based storage pods, the community wanted a new and improved experience. They asked for redundancy - both in terms of redundant power supplies and boot drives - and we delivered. Our customers wanted a faster, more powerful pod that could transmit and write data more quickly than the original backplane was able to do, and the new direct-wired pod delivered. We also innovated the original 45 Drives storage pod to include sliding rails, identifiable drives and email notifications for drive failures, all based on feedback from the community.
The eternal loathing between Storage and Networking professionals has manifested into a podcast when I am joined by well known storage bloggers to debate our dysfunctional family relationship.
Thanks to Martin Glassborow from Storagebod and Chris Evans from Architecting IT for taking the time to talk about networking and storage.
