An open-source monitoring system with a dimensional data model, flexible query language, efficient time series database and modern alerting approach.
The Simple & Reliable Logs Solution That Scales

VictoriaMetrics is a fast, cost-saving, and scalable solution for monitoring and managing time series data. It delivers high performance and reliability, making it an ideal choice for businesses of all sizes.
As a system administrator, monitoring is a key job responsibility, yet arguments seem to arise on how to implement it (usually with people who won’t be paged at 3am). Before writing this, I looked around for an article on the goals and philosophy of system monitoring, but found very little that really applied to this topic. Hopefully this will help set some expectations for admins, managers and stakeholders on what you should monitor, and why it should be monitored.
Powershell script to check windows updates using NRPE/NSClient++
Checks:
- how many critical and optional updates are available
- whether the system is waiting for reboot after installed updates
Features: - properly handles NRPE's 1024b limitation in return packet
- hidden updates return OK state
- Performance data in return packet shows titles of available critical updates
- caches updates in file to reduce network traffic, also dramatically increases script execution speed
Return Values for NRPE:
- No updates available - OK (0)
- Hidden Updates only - OK (0)
- Updates already installed, reboot required - WARNING (1)
- Optional updates available - WARNING (1)
- Critial updates available - CRITICAL (2)
- Script errors - UNKNOWN (3)
NSClient is an agent designed originally to work with Nagios but has since evolved into a fully fledged monitoring agent which can be used with numerous monitoring tools (like Icinga, Naemon, OP5, NetEye Opsview etc). If you want more in-depth information see the documentation instead.
Kayak is an application for CAN bus diagnosis and monitoring. Its main goals are a simple interface and platform independence. It is implemented in pure Java and has no platform specific dependencies. Kayak is based on SocketCAN and the connection to a SocketCAN bus takes place using TCP/IP and a socketcand server. Therefore the bus access is network transparent and can be shared with multiple users.
Kayak uses the open CAN definition format kcd. Existing .dbc CAN definitions can be converted to kcd using CANBabel.
A single distribution of libraries that automatically collects traces and metrics from your app, displays them locally, and sends them to any analysis tool.
The key features of OpenCensus include:
- Standard wire protocols and consistent APIs for handling trace and metric data.
- A single set of libraries for many languages, including Java, C++, Go, .Net, Python, PHP, Node.js, Erlang, and Ruby.
- Included integrations with web and RPC frameworks, making traces and metrics available out of the box.
- Included exporters for storage and analysis tools. Right now the list includes Zipkin, Prometheus, Datadog, Stackdriver, and Azure App Insights.
- Full open source availability for additional integrations and export options.
- No additional server or daemon is required to support OpenCensus.
- In process debugging: an optional agent for displaying request and metrics data on instrumented hosts.
Poolmon is a director mailserver pool monitoring script for Dovecot, meant to
roughly duplicate the functionality of node health monitors on dedicated load-
balancers like LVS or F5 BigIP LTM. This script can be safely run on more than
one director host simultaneously, although differences in node reachability may
result in mailserver vhost count flapping.
Consult the help text for more details on functionality.
This is the last post in a 4-part series about Kubernetes monitoring. Part 1 discusses how Kubernetes changes your monitoring strategies, Part 2 explores Kubernetes metrics and events you should monitor, Part 3 covers the different ways to collect that data, and this post details how to monitor Kubernetes performance with Datadog.
