OpenStack is on a six-month release cycle, with each release given a code name starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet. On October 7th, OpenStack Newton was released. Let's look at a few highlights from OpenStack's 2016 Newton release.
In addition to the usual enormous number of incremental improvements, the Newton release focused on ease of deployment and usability improvements, as well as improved container-management tools. It also added the Tacker project, for deploying and managing virtual network functions (NFV) on OpenStack.
Open Kinetic is an open source Collaborative Project formed under the auspices of the Linux Foundation dedicated to creating an open standard around Ethernet-enabled, key/value Kinetic devices.
Kinetic is a drive architecture in which the drive is a key/value server with Ethernet connectivity. The architecture is inspired by the scale out data center in which Ethernet and Linux are ubiquitous, open source software reduces barriers to entry, and hardware is becoming more commoditized.

White Rabbit is a fully deterministic Ethernet-based network for general purpose data transfer and synchronization. It can synchronize over 1000 nodes with sub-ns accuracy over fiber lengths of up to 10 km. Commercially available.
Open vSwitch is a production quality, multilayer virtual switch licensed under the open source Apache 2.0 license. It is designed to enable massive network automation through programmatic extension, while still supporting standard management interfaces and protocols (e.g. NetFlow, sFlow, IPFIX, RSPAN, CLI, LACP, 802.1ag). In addition, it is designed to support distribution across multiple physical servers similar to VMware's vNetwork distributed vswitch or Cisco's Nexus 1000V.

CANopen is the internationally standardized (EN 50325-4) CAN-based higher-layer protocol for embedded control system. The set of CANopen specification comprises the application layer and communication profile as well as application, device, and interface profiles. CANopen provides very flexible configuration capabilities. These specifications are developed and maintained by CiA members.
CANopen networks are used in a very broad range of application fields such as machine control, medical devices, off-road and rail vehicles, maritime electronics, building automation as well as power generation.
