Our abstraction stack
We try to build a generic abstraction stack between our different resources (CPU, RAM, disk, etc.) and our services (Chat, Storage, etc.), we develop our own tools when needed.
Our first abstraction level is the NixOS level, which installs a bunch of standard components:
- Wireguard: provides encrypted communication between remote nodes
- Nomad: schedule containers and handle their lifecycle
- Consul: distributed key value store + lock + service discovery
- Docker: package, distribute and isolate applications
mailcow: dockerized is an open source groupware/email suite based on docker.
mailcow relies on many well known and long used components, which in combination result in an all around carefree email server.
Each container represents a single application, connected in a bridged network:
Kubernetes is an open-source orchestration engine for automating deployments, scaling, managing, and providing the infrastructure to host containerized applications. At the infrastructure level, a Kubernetes cluster is comprised of a set of physical or virtual machines, each acting in a specific role.
The master machines act as the brain of all operations and are charged with orchestrating containers that run on all of the node machines. Each node is equipped with a container runtime. The node receives instruction from the master and then takes actions to either create pods, delete them, or adjust networking rules.
